Atlético Madrid 2-0 Manchester United: Barrios Scores in 47 Seconds as Yoro Sees Red
An opening goal inside a minute
Atlético Madrid beat Manchester United 2-0 at the Metropolitano in Madrid on Tuesday 13 October 2026, a Champions League league-phase result that extended United's winless run to five games. Kick-off was at 10 pm Kenyan time (EAT).
Pablo Barrios scored after just 47 seconds, finishing after a long ball over the top left the United defence exposed. It was a sign of Atlético's plan. Diego Simeone said afterwards his side expected United to press high and wanted to beat that first press and hurt them on the wings.

United create chances but cannot score
United hit back with chances of their own. Bryan Mbeumo's deflected shot went narrowly wide in the 13th minute and Jan Oblak saved another effort from him in the 24th. A minute later Baleba had a free header that went straight at Oblak, and Alex Grimaldo's free kick hit the frame of the goal in the 27th.

Just before half-time, in the 45th minute, Johnny Cardoso put the ball in the net but VAR ruled out the goal for handball in the build-up. After the break Julián Álvarez's volley struck the woodwork in the 55th minute, and in the 58th Bruno Fernandes missed a chance created by Tielemans. Sky Sports counted four big chances for United without a goal, their most in a Champions League match since September 2012.
Yoro sent off, Lookman seals it
The turning point came midway through the second half. Referee Glenn Nyberg sent off Leny Yoro after an on-field review, judging that he had denied Jonathan David a goalscoring chance with a challenge just inside the United half. Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison called the decision "soft".
Ademola Lookman made it 2-0 in the 79th minute, scoring on the rebound about five minutes after the red card. Oblak had made key saves earlier, and Barrios and Lookman were the match-winners.

What Simeone and Carrick said
Simeone said Atlético had chances to go further ahead. He also spoke about Álvarez, who was jeered when substituted in the 71st minute, saying he is "getting closer to the player we want to see". He added that Cardoso, back after summer ankle surgery, is in a very good moment.
Michael Carrick said the United players were bitterly disappointed and that the team needed to focus on the trip to Leeds. He had not seen the post-match interview of Lisandro Martínez, who told Amazon Prime that the club's situation reflects how it currently operates and that it needs to bring in players, adding that changing managers is not the only answer. Carrick said it was not the time to discuss it.
What it means
United remain on three points in the Champions League after their 4-0 opening win over Sabah, and Carrick's side go to Leeds on Sunday 18 October. Their next European match is away at Como on 21 October.
Atlético have won five in a row since losing to Liverpool, and play Espanyol in LaLiga on 17 October before travelling to Stuttgart in the Champions League.
